Camping in South Africa and Lesotho

The Storms River Mouth Rest Camp in the Tsitsikamma Coastal National Park is our Paradise. As far as we are concerned, it is undisputedly the most beautiful camping spot in the world. Having visited it throughout my childhood and seen the various changes taken place, it is still the best place we have camped, ever. Since the two of us first started going out, we have camped at Storms River Mouth for at least ten days out of every year while we lived in South Africa. The non-powered tent sites are demarcated clearly and have ample space available. This is definitely one place where, even when it is full, you are not camping on top of your neighbour. Each site comes standard with a brick braai (barbecue) and the sunsets over the sea while braai-ing, with dolphins making their evening swim past, just cannot be beaten. Just remember, to get one of the sea-front sites you will have to book at least nine months in advance. Activities include numerous short walks through the rainforests or swimming/snorkelling/scuba diving in the environmentally protected waters, which is awesome as the underwater life is abundant. Some years we took mountain bikes and cycled in the local pine forests, other times it was road cycling up and down the access road. The best known hiking trail in South Africa, The Otter Trail, also commences here and takes one on a 5-day hike (42 km) westwards to Natures Valley -- See our trip report below.
